Although the adverts today could be deemed as being more subtle, the fact is that the lack of equality between sexes is still very much present.
After looking on the website 'genderads.com' and analysing some of the images on there for their representation of gender, I came across this advert from the vacuum cleaner company 'Hoover' from the 1950's/1960's which reinforces the stereotype that women are always 'housewives' and men as the 'bredwinner' for the household.
This advert shows a 1960's woman on christmas morning unwrapping her 'ideal' gift, a Hoover vacuum cleaner. Her expression shows pure happiness at the potential prospect of being able to clean her home more thoroughly. Her hand sits on the vacuum in a very compassionate and maternal way, like you would expect to see if she were making contact with one of her children.
The text reads 'Christmas Morning, She'll Be Happier With a Hoover', and in brackets 'and forever after', suggesting that she will be using the hoover for the rest of her life, and also promoting the product as being long lasting and tough. In the small print below the woman, it reads 'She cares about her home, you know, if you really care about her... wouldn't it be a good idea to consider a Hoover for Christmas?'. This is subjecting the male reader to guilty feelings, supposedly wanting to trip him with guilt into buying the product being promoted.
The angle of the advertisement is interesting as well, even though it is a painting and not a photograph, it is shot down on the woman, making her appear less dominant and strong, and since the target reader is supposedly males, this is again reinstating the idea that men are the dominant gender. Also the woman's eyes are diverted downwards looking at the gift tag, but not looking at the viewer, as this would again make her appear powerful.
She is wearing her hair done, with a lot of flattering make-up, which refers back to the idea of vanity and women, suggesting that one of the only things women care about is the way that they look.
I find the use of women in the media to be incredibly interesting, the way in which they are subjected to not only subtle mockery but how they are demeaned by men as being the inferior gender. It is something I am always interested to learn about, and I think that the use of women in the media and the male gaze might be something I would like to read more about and possibly use as a subject for one of my Context of Practice photographic briefs in the future.
